Shear stress

A shear stress , often denoted τ (Greek: tau), is the component of stress coplanar with a material cross section. Shear stress arises from the force vector component parallel to the cross section. Normal stress, on the other han arises from the force vector component perpendicular to the material cross section on which it acts. Weiteres Bild melden Melde das anstößige Bild.

It differs to tensile and compressive stresses, which are caused by forces perpendicular to the area on which they act. Shearing stress is also known as tangential stress. V is the resultant shearing force which passes through the centroid of the area A being sheared.

It deforms original rectangular shape objects into parallelograms. It is of the same dimension as pressure. But while pressure causes compression, shear stress causes shear. For understanding shear, look at this image. Consider a cube of area A, and only the top surfac.

These points are at angles 2u 90° from points Pand P which agrees with the fact that the planes of maximum shear . The role of shear stress in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Short-range forces, such as viscous forces, have a molecular origin and are, as a result, generally negligible unless there is physical contact between parts of the fluid. They can be approximated by forces on the surface of each part of the fluid and lead to the concept of stress in a fluid.
